Porter Public Opinion

 August 2003

Feedlots and large confinements have been a huge part of our local news lately. The most controversial being the Knutson feedlot which has resulted in a lawsuit against Yellow Medicine County. How do you feel about this general topic or specifically the Knutson case?

Opinion

Canby is a rural community. Rural communities have agriculture. There are dozens of hog facilities in our area and the acceptance of this one should be no different. It will not affect Canby or Del Clarke. This issue would not be creating so much controversy if it wasn't for Art Larson. His reaction to this idea was pretty radical. It was as if he was suggesting that people were going to start growing a third arm or that Earth would lose its rotation. Give farmers a chance to make a living. Everyone wonders why we are losing farmers in the region. A reaction like this doesn't help in encouraging them.

Opinion

As a person with a serious health problem, I would like to be assured that the air I breath is not fouled with the nasty smell of hog manure. I don't blame anyone for the condition my lungs are in, due to the many years I smoked, but I have to take care of health that the Good Lord has given me...I've known Art Larson and his family since I moved to Minnesota, in the latter part of the 70's, and I trust what he says.
