Porter Resident Harry Noyes Passes Away at Age 89
PORTER
- Mass of Christian Burial for Harry Noyes, 89, of Porter, will
be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby.
Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday with a Prayer Service at
3 p.m. immediately followed by a Rosary at Rehkamp-Horvath
Funeral Home in Minneota. Visitation will continue from
9:30-10:30 a.m. on Monday at the church in Canby. A private
family burial will take place at a later date.
Harry Felix Noyes was born Oct. 23,
1922, in Grandview Township, to Camiel and Mary (Dobbelaere)
Noyes. He was raised on a farm near Ghent and attended country
school through the 8th grade. On Nov. 18, 1947, he was united in
marriage to Leona Helen Downing. To this union of 64 years, 11
children were born; Marcie, David, Marge, Larry, Bob, John, Tom,
Sharon, Pat, Marilyn, and Harvey.
Harry was a faithful husband, a good
father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an active
member of St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Taunton
until 2009, and then a member of the St. Peters Catholic Church
in Canby. He seldom missed Sunday Mass.
Harry and Leona farmed northeast of
Porter from 1951 until 2002. Harry loved the land. He farmed the
way he knew best, with good intentions. Harry was not just a
farmer of the land, but also raised livestock. For many years
the family ran a dairy farm, raised beef cattle and hogs. He had
a custom swathing business and enjoyed working for others. He
lived for the satisfaction of a job well done.
Harry was a straight shooter and a man
of his word. His firm handshake was as good as a signed
document. He raised his children with a strong hand; instilling
values of hard work, promptness and honesty. Harry got up early,
stayed up late and led by example.
In 2002, Harry and Leona moved off the
farm and built a house in Porter. He and his family celebrated
his 80th birthday on move-in day. Senior dining and playing
cards at the Porter Cafe soon became favorite pastimes.
Fittingly, Harry passed away during a game of Pepper at the
cafe, on Feb. 2, 2012, at the age of 89. Overall, life dealt
Harry a good hand.
Harry is lovingly remembered by his wife
Leona of Porter; children, David (and Cora) Noyes of Savage,
Marge (and Dale ) Swanson of Kensington, Larry (and Darlene)
Noyes of Sioux Falls, S.D., Bob (and Teresa) Noyes of Porter,
John (and Julie) Noyes of Porter, Tom (and Becky) Noyes of
Porter, Sharon (and Chuck) Buysse of Marshall, Pat (and Doug)
Blackwell of Commerce, Mich., Marilyn (and Jadee) Larkin of
Kensington, and Harvey (and Dicksy) Noyes of Marshall; 30
grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, all of whom he was
very proud. He is also survived by his brother George Noyes and
sister Emma Downing.
He was preceded in death by his
daughter; Marcie Kimpe Ningen; grandson, Greg Kimpe; his
parents; brothers, Mike and Remi; and sister, Martha.
May he rest in peace.

US Postal Service Pauses Closer Decision Process for
Porter Post Office
The Porter Post Office Closure Decision has been placed on pause
until May 15, 2012 when decision proceedings will resume. The
delay is a direct effect of Senate and House of Representative
inquiries into the decision making process and the impact of
closures on small communities such as Porter. The delay will
also allow the US Postal Service to re-evaluate alternative
options to reduce their deficit spending. Not all Post Offices
are safe from this delay, however, hundreds of US Post Offices
are being closed in December and January and hundreds of Postal
Distribution Centers will be closed in the coming months as
well.
The community support and campaign to support the Porter Post
Office has made a difference, but it must continue to make a
final impact when the decision making process resumes in May.
Click Here for ways that you can show your
support of the Porter Post Office and keep it off of the closure
list for good! The only way to keep the Post Office from closing
is to fully patronize its services including usage of PO Boxes
(some in Porter have stopped receiving rural route mail delivery
at the road and have opened a PO Box in the Post Office in
recent months), purchasing of stamps through the Window and
mailing letters and packages inside the Post Office.
