Porter Market Day Sale - April 19, 2001

Record Books Take a Year Off

Plagued by a long winter and a very wet spring, the best explanation of Porter's Annual Market Day Sale, held April 19, 2001. The sale is traditionally held the first Saturday in April, but was pushed back two weeks this year because of snow, in fact piles of snow still sitting in January depths in the auction grounds and around town.

The Auction day itself was chilly and rainy, putting a damper on the number in attendance on the sale day. The number of household consignments was also down due to pouring rain early Saturday morning when those consignments take place. As in all years, the citizens of Porter and many other organizations and individuals made the best of what we had to work with, and all deserve a huge round of applause and Congratulations, for yet another wonderful Porter Market Day Sale.

The Household Sale has seen its better years, but the rain would only destroy the common household item typically found on the auction. Even consignments were delayed this year as everyone patiently waited for the heavy morning rain to pass over, only 2 and 1/2 block long rows of household items were on the sale this year, as compared to the typical 4 to 5.

The Household Auctioneer had it made with his auction being held on the pavement of North Brook Avenue and Maple Street. The Two Machinery Auctioneers however, had to hold their sales in the mudded trails of the new machinery auction ground, now located in the Northwestern edge of town.

The Machinery Sale Grounds after the sale. The sales wrapped up quicker than normal this year as people headed home to warm up and dry off. Machinery consignments were on track to previous years, and bring hopes that the new auction grounds will provide the capacity of the old grounds, which have now become the Porter Industrial Park.
