The Search Continues
Search crews have returned to
Porter now that the snow has melted away to search for the
remains of Brandon Swanson who went missing near Porter nearly
two years ago. Search teams are headquartering at the Porter
Fire Hall and are searching a nearly 120 square mile area around
Porter that they feel Brandon may have walked through after
abandoning his car on a township road between Porter and
Taunton. Search crews are working with local landowners to
obtain permission to search their land and are thankful for the
cooperation the Porter community has been providing in their
efforts.

New Signs for the
Yellow Medicine River
The Minnesota Department of
Transportation installed signs on Porter's east edge May 27
labeling the Yellow Medicine River that runs on the town's east
side. The project is an ongoing effort as the state continues to
build awareness of the tributaries to the many tributaries in
this part of the state that feed into the Minnesota River. The
Yellow Medicine River is a direct tributary to the Minnesota
River as the two rivers meet up just south of Granite Falls.
Porter Struck by Severe Storm, Hail, 75 MPH Winds on June 26
A
severe storm hit Porter during the afternoon of June 26 leaving
behind a large mess. The entire community lost power for several
hours as Otter Tail Power Company and the Porter Fire Department
searched for trees and branches that were lying across power
lines. On Porter's north side a very large tree was blown over
and landed atop the Mildred Schoneman residence. On the
Northeast corner of town a grain bin was blown over on the
Johnson Farm and pushed into the middle of the neighboring
field. Nearly a dozen well established trees were uprooted in
all on the north side. Crops to the East of Porter have
preliminarily been determined a total loss due to large hail
accompanying the winds. Flash Flood Warnings have been issued
for the area. Total rainfall for the month of June is over 10
inches in Porter.

Bonita Rosamond Sweet was born January 26,
1914 in Pipestone, MN, the daughter of William & Euphema (Vogt)
Sweet. She was the fifth daughter to be born of this union and
the last to survive. Bonnie married Louis C. Ehlers on January
29, 1935. They farmed in the area for many years. In 1973, they
purchased a house in Porter, MN and she worked at Southwest
State University in Marshall, MN until her retirement. She was
very musical, and she played a saxophone in school, as well as
the organ and piano. She enjoyed all kinds of gardening and
definitely had a “green thumb.” She loved animals and there were
always pets of various types around the house. Bonnie especially
loved to feed the birds and squirrels at her house.
Bonnie is survived by her two daughters,
Jackie Kopp of Lakeville, MN and Shirlee Gabbert of Bloomington,
MN; three grandchildren, Steve Kopp of Burnsville, MN, Kevin
Kopp of Fort Lupton, CO and Gregory Smith of Honolulu, HI.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
four sisters; her husband; and infant brother. Blessed be her
memory.
