2006 Leaves Community Members With Many Memories

2006 was a very interesting year in the history of Porter. Celebration was the biggest story of the year with Porter turning 125 years old. The year was also a strong example as to how the Porter community always comes together when needed. View the stories that affected Porter in 2006.

Festivities Planned to Benefit the Porter Hall

A benefit for the Porter Community Hall will take place on February 9^th and 10^th according to even organizer Lois Lensing. Friday's festivities will include a Miss Porter Sweetheart Pageant at the Porter Hall. Saturday will include a Fishing Derby at Lake Elina, South of Porter and a Chili feed at the Goose Pit Bar in the afternoon. For more information contact Lois Lensing.

Funeral Arrangements for Porter Resident Florene Ningen

Funeral services for Florene Ningen will be held at 1:00 on Thursday, July 26 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter. Burial will be at the church cemetery following the service. Visitation will take place Wednesday from 5:00-8:00 PM with a 7:00 prayer service. Visitation will resume at noon Thursday at the Church. Mrs. Ningen passed away Monday afternoon at Avera McKennen Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Florene Ningen, age 56, passed away on Monday, July 23, 2007 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2007 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter, MN with Rev. Ellen Munter officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25 at Birk Funeral Home in Canby with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Burial will be in the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery.

Florene Ann Ningen was born November 25, 1950 to Ernest and Olga (Wentzlaf) Wallert in Ivanhoe, MN. She graduated from Canby High School and then worked in the Twin Cities at Minnegasco. In 1976, she moved to a farm near Porter and worked several different jobs. She started Family Travel in Canby in 1990, and in 1996 she added massage therapy to her business.

Florene was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter. She was a Bethel Luther League advisor and sang in the church choir. For many years, she was a member of the music group, Steppin’ Out. Some of her enjoyments in life were watching football on TV, attending her grandchildren’s activities, and spending time with friends and family on the back patio.

Florene will be deeply missed by her husband, Bill Ningen; son, Graham Dybsetter (fiancé, Stacy DeMuth); step-children, Carmon (Brian) Mamer; Mike (Sheila) Ningen; Monica (Korey) Tuttle; step-grandchildren, Kyle, Ashley, & John Mamer and Alissa Ningen; mother, Olga Wallert; brother, Duane (Charleen) Wallert; and many other family members.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ernest; brother, Lowell; and sister, Karen Anderson.
